HONOLULU – The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i (JCCH) is proud to present a very special culinary event just in time for Mother’s Day. Inspired Food – The Roots of Hawai‘i Cuisine Brunch & Talk-Story with Chef Alan Wong & Arnold Hiura will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2013, 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i - Manoa Grand Ballroom.

Join Chef Alan Wong and author Arnold Hiura for a morning filled with stories of their mothers who inspired the books and careers of these two men as well as a look at the roots of Hawai‘i cuisine. This unique and special event is limited to 200 guests. Individual tickets are $125 per person or you may reserve table seating for eight (8) for $2,000.    ...

12.00 Nishiyama's lecture is part of “Japan After 3.11: Change and Hope from the Center of Triple Disaster,” a free public symposium commemorating the second anniversary of Japan’s March 11th earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis. The symposium will also feature: The Honorable Mazie Hirono, who will address attendees via a video message; Japan-America Society of Hawai‘i’s Kelsey Soma Turek, who will address Rainbow for Japan Kids, a program that brings children from the affected regions of Japan to Hawai’i for respite; UH Mānoa MA candidate Tomoki Kimura, who will share a personal account of the event; Aya H. Kimura, assistant professor in the Women’s Studies Department at UH Mānoa, who will address the subject of food and agriculture in post 3/11 Japan; Dr. Mary McDonald, director for the Center for Japanese Studies at UH Mānoa, along with UHM PhD candidate Yoshitaka Miyake from the Geography Department, who will address the topic of change and hope in the tsunami zone.

Exhibition Overview

Every year on the third day of the third month, families throughout Japan honor daughters by displaying in their homes an elaborate collection of dolls decorated to resemble court nobles from the Heian era (794-1185). Hina matsuri (literally, “Doll Festival,” but commonly known in English as “Girls’ Day”) and its custom of displaying dolls did, in fact, originate during the Heian era. At the time, dolls were thought to be capable of absorbing evil spirits and purifying one’s home.
