Inspired Food – The Roots of Hawai‘i Cuisine Brunch & Talk-Story with Chef Alan Wong & Arnold Hiura will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2013, 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i - Manoa Grand Ballroom.
Join Chef Alan Wong and author Arnold Hiura for a morning filled with stories of their mothers who inspired the books and careers of these two men as well as a look at the roots of Hawai‘i cuisine. Nishiyama's lecture is part of “Japan After 3.11: Change and Hope from the Center of Triple Disaster,” a free public symposium commemorating the second anniversary of Japan’s March 11th earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis. The symposium will also feature: The Honorable Mazie Hirono, who will address attendees via a video message; Japan-America Society of Hawai‘i’s Kelsey Soma Turek, who will address Rainbow for Japan Kids, a program that brings children from the affected regions of Japan to Hawai’i for respite; UH Mānoa MA candidate Tomoki Kimura, who will share a personal account of the event; Aya H. Kimura, assistant professor in the Women’s Studies Department at UH Mānoa, who will address the subject of food and agriculture in post 3/11 Japan; Dr. Mary McDonald, director for the Center for Japanese Studies at UH Mānoa, along with UHM PhD candidate Yoshitaka Miyake from the Geography Department, who will address the topic of change and hope in the tsunami zone.

20th ANNUAL NEW YEAR’S ‘OHANA FESTIVAL
As part of its New Year’s tradition, the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i (JCCH) will ring in 2013 with its annual New Year’s ‘Ohana Festival. This fun-filled event will feature food, crafts, entertainment and cultural demonstrations of the people who make up this island state. This year the festival will feature 17 food vendors including favorites such as okonomiyaki, KC Waffle Dogs, grilled mochi, shave ice, and andagi to name a few. There will also be nearly 30 craft vendors, games and crafts for children, kimono dressing, and mochi pounding demonstrations. There will be a packed schedule of entertainment on two stages including special performances by Jaymie Lei Melket, Jon Yamasato, Ban Daisuke and Kikaida & Friends! “R Style Social” (#RStyle) brings to life the latest holiday fashions from Royal Hawaiian Center’s R Magazine. Models, styled similarly to the R Magazine features, will showcase the outfits and accessories at participating stores during a two-hour open house event. Guests are invited to pick up the new issue of R Magazine along with an R Socialite Pass at the check-in between bebe and The Apple Store on level 1 of Building C. The first 200 customers will receive a complimentary Royal Hawaiian Center water bottle or vanity bag. Visit each of the participating shops and boutiques to receive R Socialite Pass stamps. Completed passes may be turned in at the end of the night to enter a drawing to win the grand prize of a $500 Royal Hawaiian Center gift card or a $250 gift card.
